In the past decade, Florida’s pedestrian fatality rates have consistently been among the highest in the nation, raising concern among safety experts and advocates.

On November 6, 2007, first-year law student at the University of Florida, Catherine Barclift, was struck by a car and killed while crossing the street at the intersection of 34th Street and Radio Road in Gainesville, Fla.

Many pedestrian deaths are a result of error or non-compliance. In 2006, 76 percent of pedestrians who were killed did not cross the street at a crosswalk.
