Ignorance of disabilities

new generation of hate

by Josh Benton

Imagine for a moment that you are unable to control your body. You say things and make movements you cannot help. Now you are in class, you make one of those movements or scream something that is not even a word or worse - is a curse word.

Millions deal with problems such as these every day. Psychological, neurological or physical problems that can make people the uncontrollable target of discrimination or hate. These people across the globe too often are outcasts by nature, whether it be by way of jokes, insults or a simple inability to control one's actions.

But, these often-dubbed "hidden disabilities" are becoming more prevalent within people throughout the world and are being to see recognition by others. People with afflictions such as Tourette syndrome are no longer seen as being possessed by the devil or branded as
spastics only to be confined to mental institutions.

There is the American with Disabilities Act to make sure all new buildings have access ramps and not that nobody can be died a job or an education because of a disability. However, rarely are people punished for mocking a poor schoolchildren who doesn't know their ABCs because of chemical imbalances.

This is just a small part of a new generation of hate - a new way to make someone else's life just a little bit more difficult than it has to be.
